Description

Sharpless 2-200, also known as HDW 2 (Hartl-Dengl-Weinberger 2), commonly called the "Bearclaw nebula", is a planetary nebula (PN) in the constellation Cassiopeia. This image was processed as H-O-O narrowband with RGB stars.

Despite low surface brightness planetary nebulae HDW 2 contains very hot and energetic central stars, which are the remnant cores of an older star that died and ejected its outer gaseous layers. The energy output of the central stars is so high that it is capable of ionizing unrelated gas in the surrounding vicinity causing it to glow. Hence the outer halo which was captured mainly in H-alpha.
